I love winter. Yes, I’m one of those people. The starkness of the landscape, the positive and negative space created by the trees, and the cold all please me. When I took anatomy, I was lucky to have visited the University of Wisconsin anatomy lab and seen what we look like on the inside. Veins, arteries, and nerves look strikingly like roots and branches. It made me feel that we are connected to the fauna that lives around us. Winter Within is also about a time of quiet, a fallow period within the self where things lie sleeping, resting, and waiting. Perhaps, a gentle loneliness pervading the piece.
