The Octopuses' Garden

Octopuses are endlessly fascinating to me. They are highly intelligent, (I always appreciate that quality in another being) mostly solitary, mysterious, and incredibly resourceful. Not to mention they can change color at will!  Did you know that it’s extremely difficult to keep octopuses in captivity? They are true escape artists! Sadly, they don’t always make it back to the ocean. Can you imagine experiencing the world as an octopus? SENSATION! I highly recommend the book which was a part of the inspiration for this painting: The Soul of an Octopus A surprising exploration into the wonder of consciousness by Sy Montgomery.About the series:

I love the intimacy of small works, especially those packed with meaning that can be held in your hand.  In this series, I set out to paint small scenes of symbols that have played an important role in my life, and also happen to be some of my favorite things (Sound of Music reference intended). I hope these small wearable pieces of art will act as reminders to explore the world, and see magic in the ordinary. I make each one of the pendants by hand starting with prints of the original watercolors. The glass cabochon slightly magnifies the work, giving the pendants an appearance from another time.

30 x40mm, zinc alloy, brass finish, 30 in. chain, Alexandra N Sherman initialed on bottom.
