Workshop: Painting from the Subconscious in Watercolor

Leonardo da Vinci wrote of pareidolia as an approach for painters: "If you look at any walls spotted with various stains or with a mixture of different kinds of stones, [or] if you are about to invent some scene, you will be able to see in it a resemblance to various different landscapes adorned with mountains, rivers, rocks, trees, plains, wide valleys, and various groups of hills. You will also be able to see… strange expressions of faces, and outlandish costumes, and an infinite number of things which you can then reduce into separate and well-conceived forms."

Pareidolia is the ability to see shapes or make pictures out of randomness, like seeing animals in clouds, the supposed face on Mars, or images in Rorschach inkblots. Using Pareidolia as an approach, this watercolor workshop will focus on techniques for painting from our subconscious. It’s relaxing and fun to paint without a pre-conceived notion of the finished work. You will never know what you will end up painting!

We will focus on additive and subtractive techniques for working in watercolor, gain experience with pigments, and learn how to pull a recognizable face or object from seemingly abstract brushstrokes. No experience needed.

This class is great for repeat students as well as first -timers as there is always something new to explore.

Workshop: Fluid Painting with Watercolor on Yupo Paper (2 Session)

Exciting things happen when you go with the flow of watercolor on Yupo, a synthetic paper made of polypropylene. Because it is non-absorbent, Yupo allows for special effects one cannot achieve on more traditional papers, and as such requires a different technical approach. It lends itself well to fluid painting, vibrant compositions, abstraction, immediacy, and working intuitively, especially since the paint can be easily removed!

This workshop will focus on how to let watercolor, time, and gravity become partners in the creation of abstract paintings full of color. We will explore how different pigments behave, what makes for a good composition, and how to control what seems like chaos! The first class will concentrate on creating paintings which we will then work back into, adding and removing layers. No experience necessary.

Beauty of Watercolor – Blue Iris (2 sessions)

Learn to paint beautiful images in watercolor. This two-session is designed for the beginner to intermediate artist. You will learn basic watercolor process and techniques by participating in hands on demonstrations throughout the class. At the end of the session you will have a beautiful painting of a Blue Iris (see attached photo). Working from a pre-sketched piece of prepared watercolor paper, you will learn how to build an image in transparent layers from light to dark. You will become comfortable with color mixing, washes, wet and dry painting and adding final details. The first week we will complete the entire first layer, the second week we will add depth and dimension with second and third layers and finishing touches. Discover the beauty of watercolor or add to your existing knowledge.

If desired, lockers are available to store supplies between classes; bring a lock.

You may buy your own supplies at an area art store, or purchase from us online in advance of class.

Cut it Up Collage (2 Sessions)

Have you been collecting bits and pieces of paper ephemera but aren’t sure how to transform them into a collage? Learn the basic techniques for cutting, pasting, and creating beautiful compositions and intriguing narratives in collage whether you want to work representationally or abstractly.

We will look at different types of collage, discuss collecting techniques, background supports, how to treat different papers, overcoming the fear of cutting into an image, and create a series of small collages.

Students are encouraged to bring any paper ephemera, old books, magazines, ticket stubs, or stamps they have collected to use in their own projects. Collage material will also be provided by the instructor.

Intuitive Silhouettes in Watercolor Workshop

Intuitive Silhouettes in Watercolor Workshop

The fluid nature of watercolor invites us to paint in a free and suggestive manner rather than be overwhelmed by detail. In this workshop, learn how to paint a loose, full-body silhouette intuitively in watercolor. We will begin by looking at the art of several female watercolor painters who explore and celebrate the female form in their work. Techniques, such as how to make a wash, control the paint, and make corrections, will all be covered. We will also discuss how and when to assert tighter control over the paint and when to let it go to facilitate the beautiful bleeds for which watercolor is so well known. While we work, we will also be exploring color and experiencing the various personalities inherent in each of the pigments.

All you need to bring is your intuitive sense of color -- no experience necessary!

All supplies will be provided by the instructor. 10 spaces.

$40 Sunday June 3rd 1:30 – 4:00PM, Sign-up in advance required (in my shop)
